Artist Workshop:

How to Plan for a Year of Art Business

Thursday, January 29

6:00-8:00pm

Participants will hear from the organizers of SOMA Affordable Art (Sumana, Magie, Ken, and Natalie) about how they’re each planning for a new year of art in their business.

Sumana, Magie, Ken, and Natalie will speak to releasing collections of work, marketing their art online and in email newsletters, planning for art markets, and collaborating with other local businesses for community growth. Hear their ideas and ask questions about how to try them!

Then, participants will have discussion and planning time for their own 2026 art goals and art business planning.

Natalie Crandall is a painter based in Maplewood, New Jersey. Working with acrylic paints, she transforms thrifted frames into one-of-a-kind pieces of art, often incorporating the frame itself into the design for a fully reimagined look. Her work is characterized by playful, abstract interpretations of everyday objects—florals, fruits, motifs, symbols, and colors that evoke mood and emotion. Natalie spent 17 years in a career in education as a teacher, coach, and leader, and coming back to painting as her full-time focus changed her life. She hopes her art will help others embrace their own abundant creative possibilities, too.

  • Magie McGowan

    Painting

Magie and Brian McGowan are artists based in Maplewood NJ, though both originally from NYC. They have collaborated on many art projects together including the most recent utility box seen on Springfield Ave near Walgreens. Magie is also a local tattoo artist(home sweet home tattoo), and will be featuring traditional tattoo style art and illustrative florals. Brian’s art aligns with visionary style, fused with psychedelic imagery, with many patterns, details, and oftentimes vibrant colors.

  • Shoemona

Sumana Ghosh-Witherspoon is a fine artist and textile designer. She uses mixed media and block printing to create her work. She will have art prints, original art, and clothing featuring her patterns for sale.

Ken Stanek has often been described as a "local watercolor documentarian”, which he likes quite a bit. Ken began his art career in 2023 and his work as an artist in 1977. He draws on 20 years of skills from his graphic design career to build his brand & support his art community. In his portfolio you’ll find portraits of people, pets, places, houses, weddings - all rendered with a generous smattering of memories and moments.

What our Art Vendors said:

“This shit is Bananas B-A-N-A-N-A-S. Seriously though, I am so bowled over by your coordination as a team, the advertising you did to get the word out, the strategy behind knowing what works at an art sale! You all should be so proud. This was absolutely hands down the best art sale event I have ever been a part of. ”

— Kim, “Death by Paper Cuts”

“The set up, the marketing, the management, the vibes, music, etc. This was just fantastic! Beyond my expectation!
